[كسف] الكسفة: القطعة من الشئ. يقال: أعطني كِسْفَةً من ثوبك، والجمع كِسْفٌ وكِسَفٌ. ويقال: الكِسْفُ والكِسْفَةُ واحدٌ. وقال الأخفش: من قرأ: {كِسْفاً من السماء} جعله واحداً. ومن قرأ {كِسَفاً} جعله جميعاً. والكَسْفُ بالفتح: مصدر كَسَفْتُ البعير، إذا قطعت عرقوبَه. وكذلك كَسَفْتُ الثوب، إذا قطعته. والتَكْسيفُ: التقطيعُ. وكَسَفَتِ الشمسُ تَكْسِفُ كُسوفاً، وكَسَفَها الله كَسْفاً، يتعدَّى ولا يتعدى. قال الشاعر الشمس طالعة ليست بكاسفةٍ تبكي عليك نجومَ الليلِ والقَمَرا أي ليست تَكْسِفُ ضوءَ النجوم مع طلوعها لقلَّة ضوئها وبكائها عليك. وكذلك كَسَفَ القمرُ، إلاَّ أنَّ الأجود فيه أن يقال خسف القمر. والعامة تقول: انكسفت الشمس. وكسفت حال الرجل، أي ساءتْ. ورجلٌ كاسف البال: سيئ الحال. وكاسف الوجه، أي عابس. وفي المثل: " أَكَسْفاً وإمْساكاً " أي أَعُبوساً مع بخل.
